El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve is best known for the gray whales that
mate and give birth in its salty lagoons each winter. But other
whales - humpbacks, blue whales and orcas - also migrate to the
preserve's protected waters. On the reserve's islands, elephant
seals, common seals, seabirds and California sea lions gather. In
the lagoons, three species of marine turtles nest and lay eggs.
January through March is the best time to visit this beautiful preserve
on the Baja Peninsula. Boat tours operate from San Diego in the
US and from the village of Guerrero Negro in Baja California. On
your journey down the Baja Peninsula to El Vizcaino, you may spy other
whales - fin, minke, sperm and pilot - in the Gulf of California.
