Riding National Park is only 265 kilometers (165 miles) from Winnepeg
yet
offers urban visitors a wilderness of forests, lakes and
prairies.
Mammals benefiting from the park include black bears, bison,
moose, Manitoba elk, coyote, red fox, badger, beaver and
lynx. Birds include red-tailed hawks, bald eagles,
sharp-tailed and spruce grouse and six species of woodpeckers.
The park has more than two dozen trails, including the Grey Owl trail
which leads to Beaver Lodge Lake and the cabin once used by Grey
Owl, a Canadian author and conservationist who actively
worked to reestablish the park's beaver populations.
