Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania - An African Wildlife Hotspot

Imagine a wildlife preserve four times larger than the Serengiti - a land of volcanic springs, woodlands and savannah supporting Tanzania's largest population of elephants and a third of the world's population of wild dogs.  Selous Game Reserve is one of the most diverse game reserves in all of Africa.

Buffalo, hartebeest, sable antelope, giraffe, zebra, eland, warthog, reedbuck, wildebeest and the rare black rhino are just a few of the mammals you may see at Selous.  Predators - spotted hyenas, lions, leopards, wild dogs and crocodiles - are numerous.  And over 350

species of birds frequent the reserve, including the Bateleur eagle, carmine bee-eater, Goliath heron, spiral- horned greater kudu and open-billed stork.

WHAT TO DO

You can gain an aerial perspective of Selous by riding a cable car across the 100 meter deep Stieglers Gorge.  You can also hike the reserve if accompanied by an armed guide or see the reserve by auto safari or on a boating trip up the Rufigi River
.  During dry season, you can reach the reserve by car.  Alternatively, you can charter a plane to the refuge from Dar es Salaam.
